The Desert Truck model 42 'Sahariana' was developed for the Italian Royal Army based on the chassis and mechanics of the reliable armored car AB 41. During operations in the African theater, the need arose for a reconnaissance vehicle particularly suited to desert conditions, where sand travel required unique features lacking in available vehicles. With its low lateral profile and large wheels, the 'Sahariana' was perfect for reconnaissance and swift incursions into enemy territory. Its good range allowed it to be used for wide-ranging operations. The type of armament varied by model and included the Breda 20/65 mod 1935 machine gun, the effective 47/32 anti-tank cannon, or the Solothurn 20 mm anti-tank rifle.
