When young, the bark is brown, fissured, and smooth. Young trees have smooth, reddish-brown bark that becomes darker, thicker, and scaly as they age, with elongated plates and deep longitudinal fissures. Shoots are slender, smooth, glaucous or pruinose, with short decurrent pulvini.
